Running of the Bulls History of Spains San Fermin Festival

The Running of the Bulls is a part of the annual Festival of San Fermà n during which six bulls are released into the cobblestone streets of Pamplona, Spain, to be corralled to the city’s bullring. Participating runners demonstrate their bravado by attempting to dodge the angry bulls en route to the city center. Bull running is only one part of a larger festival to honor San Fermà n, the patron saint of Pamplona, but it is the bull run that draws thousands of annual visitors to the celebration each July. This popularity, particularly with Americans, is due in part to Ernest Hemingway’s romanticization of the event in The Sun Also Rises. Fast Facts: San Fermà n, Spain’s Running of the Bulls Short Description: As a part of the annual Festival of San Fermà n, six bulls are released into the streets of Pamplona and corralled to the bullring in the city center, accompanied by thousands of visiting bystanders.  Event Date: Annual, July 6 - July 14Location: Pamplona, Spain Though the contemporary festival is largely symbolic, its original purpose, dating back to the 13th century, was to allow herders and butchers to drive cattle from pens outside of the city to the bull ring in preparation for market days and bullfights. Pamplona still hosts bullfights on the evening of the bull run, a fact that has stirred significant controversy from animal rights organizations in recent years. Since 1924, 15 people have been killed at the running of the bulls, most recently a 27-year-old Spanish man in 2009.   Running of the Bulls   Every morning in Pamplona at 8 a.m. during the Festival of San Fermà n, six bulls and at least six steers are released into the streets and corralled into the city’s bull ring. This running of the bulls, called the encierro, takes less than five minutes. Before the run formally begins, participants sing a benediction to San Fermà n asking for protection. Most wear a common uniform: white shirt, white pants, red neck scarf, and red belt or waist scarf. The white of the uniforms is thought to reference the aprons of the medieval butchers who corralled the bulls through the streets, and the red is worn in honor of San Fermà n, who was beheaded in France in 303 A.D. After the benediction is complete, two rockets are fired: one to signal that the pen has been opened, and another to indicate the bulls have been released. The cattle used in Pamplona are four-year-old true bulls, or uncastrated males, that weigh upwards of 1,200 pounds and boast uncapped razor-sharp horns. The bulls run with steers, some mixed in with the bulls, and some running behind the bulls, encouraging forward movement. At the end of the run, a rocket is fired to indicate the bulls have entered the ring, and a final rocket concludes the event. Thanks to Ernest Hemingways The Sun Also Rises, Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls is the most famous bull run in the world. However, since bull running was once a common European village practice, it is an important feature at many summertime festivals in Spain, Portugal, southern France, and Mexico. The festival is undoubtedly dangerous; between 50 and 100 people are injured each year. Since 1924, 15 people have been killed, most recently a 27-year-old Spaniard in 2009 and a 22-year-old American in 1995. None of these fatalities have been women, owing in part to the fact that women were not permitted to participate until 1974. Despite the danger, thousands of people return to Pamplona year after year. Hemingway attended nine times, though he never participated in the run. American author Peter Milligan has run with the bulls more than 70 times over 12 years. History and Origins   The practice of bull running in Europe dates back at least to the 13th century. Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls is thought to have been an element of the Festival of San Fermà n since its inception in 1591. Far more than a festival practice, bull running—or, more accurately, corralling—was an essential activity for medieval butchers and herders who were tasked with moving cattle from ships or breeding pens outside of the village into a central enclosure in preparation for the next day’s market and bullfight. Originally taking place during the middle of the night, bull running gradually became a daytime spectator sport. Likely during the 18th century, the spectators began running with the animals, though few records exist to document this transition.   Contemporary Criticism   Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls has been a target of criticism in recent years, particularly from animal rights organizations. PETA hosts an annual Running of the Nudes, a naked march in Pamplona two days before the start of San Fermà n to protest the run and the ensuing bullfights, during which the bulls are killed. This criticism has extended to other bull runs across Europe, leading to policy changes. In the Occitan region of southern France, bulls have not been purposefully injured or killed in bull runs since the 19th century. In Catalonia, bullfighting was banned in 2012. Festival of San Fermà n The Running of the Bulls is part of the larger Festival of San Fermà n, which takes place from July 6th at noon to July 14th at midnight each year. The festival is held to honor San Fermà n, the patron saint of Pamplona. Fermà n, who is thought to have lived during the 3rd century, was the son of a Roman senator from Navarre who had converted to Christianity. Fermà n was educated in theology and ordained in Toulouse, France. While preaching in France later in his life, Fermà n was beheaded, making him a martyr. There is speculation that before losing his head, Fermà n was dragged through the streets by bulls, hence the contemporary festival in Pamplona. The Festival of San Fermà n takes place over nine days, and different events are held each day. Bull runs, bullfights, parades, and fireworks shows are held every day. Chupinazo: The official commencement of San Fermà n is marked by the firing of a chupinazo, or a firework, from the balcony of city hall on July 6.  San Fermà n Procession: On July 7, city officials parade a statue of San Fermà n through the streets, accompanied by religious leaders, community members, the local marching band, and Gigantes y Cabezudos (oversized, papier-mache, costumed figures).  Ã‚  Pobre de Mà : At midnight on July 14, the Festival of San Fermà n comes to a close with the singing of the song Pobre de Mà at city hall, followed by a final fireworks display. During the song, participants ceremoniously remove their red scarves. Comparison Of Young Goodman Brown And The Yellow Wallpaper

In the two short stories, â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† and The Yellow Wallpaper, † both protagonists, Goodman Brown and Jane’s obsession over an idea ultimately leads to their realization of their ‘failed’ judgement and the formation of a new opinion, which consequently results in the deterioration of their mental well-being. To begin, in â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† Brown’s beliefs are tested to the fullest extent when he discovers that his wife, Faith has succumbed to the involvement of witchcraft. Brown’s obsession over Faith, and what he originally believed to be her undoubted piety, is what causes Brown to form a new perspective after he learns that he can no longer blindly trust and turn to the person that had once been the most important†¦show more content†¦Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and in the shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard. The consequences of consuming one’s interest into insignificant objects and ideas result in the obfuscation of one’s judgement of reality. In both cases, the protagonists begin to hallucinate: Jane believes that she sees the woman illustrated in her description of her perception of the wallpaper creeping secretively outside in the sunlight, while Goodman Brown ‘realizes’ in his dream that his entire community and surroundings have all become evil, including the minister of his church. The characters’ mental states deteriorate rapidly to an irremediable level, although, they regard themselves as more knowledgeable of the situation than their surroundings: Jane believes that the woman from the wallpaper, as well as herself, are now free and that it is for no good reason that John faints. Greek Gods Essay Example For Students

Greek Gods Essay With our view of God, it can sometimes be difficult to comprehend the actions and thinking of the Greek deities. The Christian God does not tend to take such an active role in the affairs of peoples lives, where, on the other hand, the Greeks regarded direct involvement by the gods as a daily, uncontrollable part of life. Needless to say, divine intervention was a major variable in the equation of Homers Iliad. The gods picked who they would favour for different reasons. Except Zeus: As the symbol of supreme authority and justice, he makes judgement calls as to the other gods involvement in the war, remains impartial, and doesnt seem to get caught up in picking favourites. Even when his own son, Sarpedon, was about to die, Zeus chose to let the outcome go unaltered. On the other hand, Zeuss wife, Hera, displayed the more typical actions of a god. After Paris, a Trojan, judged Aphrodite the fairest over Hera, and, after her daughter Hebe was replaced as cupbearer to the gods by a young Trojan boy, she was quite resentful towards Troy and its people. Obviously she sided with the Greeks and would stop at no length to express her will. Scheming and manipulating she even dared to trick her husband, King of the Gods. Hera, along with Athena, who was also passed over by Paris, is seen as the chief divine aid to the Greeks. Being the god of the sea, Poseidon was another strong supporter of the ocea n-faring Greeks. Whenever Zeus turned his back Poseidon tried to help the Greeks in the fight. Poseidon felt that he was somewhat Zeuss equal as his brother, but recognizing Zeuss authority and experience, he looked to Zeus as an elder. We will write a custom essay on Greek Gods specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There were also Gods who favoured the Trojan side of the conflict. Both Apollo and Artemis, twin brother and sister, gave aid to the city of Troy. Although Artemis takes a rather minor role, Apollo, perhaps angered by Agamemmnons refusal to ransom Khryseis, the daughter of one of his priests and was constantly changing the course of the war in favour of the Trojans. Responsible for sending plague to the Greeks, Apollo was the first god to make an appearance in the Iliad. Also, mainly because Apollo and Artemis were on the Trojan side, their mother, Leto, also helped the Trojans. Aphrodite, obviously supporting Pariss judgement, sided with the Trojans. Although she was insignificant on the battlefield, Aphrodite was successful in convincing Ares, her lover and the god of war, to help the Trojans. One view of the gods seemingly constant intervention in the war was that they were just setting fate back on the right course. For instance, when Patroklos was killed outside of Troy, Apollo felt no guilt for his doings. It had already been decided that Patroklos would not take Troy, he should never have disobeyed Achilles in the first place. As a god, he was just setting fate on a straight line. Achilles laid blame on Hektor and the Trojans. He did not even consider accusing Apollo, who never came into question, although he was primarily responsible for the kill. Apollos part in the matter was merely accepted as a natural disaster or illness would be today. This general acceptance of a gods will is a recurring trend throughout the poem. A prime example of this trend is in book XXIV. Achilles, angry over the death of Patroklos brutally disgraced Hektors body. Tethering Hektors corpse through the ankles, Achilles dragged him around Patrokloss tomb every day for twelve days. This barbaric treatment was uncalled for and displeased the gods greatly. Achilles mother, Thetis, was sent by Zeus to tell him to ransom the body back to the Trojans. One may think Achilles would be possessive of the body and attempt to put up a fuss as he did before with Agamemmnon in Book I. But, Achilles showed humility and respect for the gods and immediately agreed to ransom the body to the Trojans, showing that all mortals, even god-like Achilles, were answerable to the gods. .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .postImageUrl , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:hover , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:visited , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:active { border:0!important; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:active , .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub2f64ff95e9d284741fb293bc028e0dc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Benefits of stem cell research EssayThis ideology would seem to give the gods a sort of unlimited freedom on earth, although, the gods could not always do as they pleased and eventually had to come before Zeus. Zeus acted as a balance of sorts throughout the Iliad. He had to keep the gods in order and make sure that what fate decreed would happen. For example, after Achilles re-enters the battle Zeus declared that if Achilles was allowed to go on slaughtering the Trojans with nothing to slow him down, he would take Troy before fate said it would happen. Therefore, to counter Achilles massive retaliation against the Trojans, Zeus allowed the gods to go back to the battle fi eld. In Zeuss own interests, he preferred to deal with issues more personal to the individual heros of the Iliad. This can be seen throughout the book as Zeus attempted to increase the honour of certain individuals. Zeus knew that Hektor was going to be killed by Achilles, and, feeling sorry for Hektor Zeus attempted to allow Hektor to die an honourable death. For instance, when Hektor stripped Achilles armour off Patroklos, Zeus helped Hektor fill out the armour so he would not seem like less of a man then Achilles. Zeus also gave his word to Thetis that Achilles would gain much glory showing his involvement on a personal level. Homer used the gods and their actions to establish twists on the plot of the war. It would not have been possible for him to write the story without the divine interventions of the gods. Indeed, they affected every aspect the poem in some way, shape or form. Yet, from the immortal perspective of the Greek god, the Trojan war, and everything related to it, was only a passing adventure in the great expanse of time.

Issac Newton and Paving the Way for Modern Physics Essay

Issac Newton and Paving the Way for Modern Physics - Essay Example It is thus no exaggeration to say that Newton paved the way for Modern Physics. The rest of this essay will flesh out this claim. Although retrospectively, Isaac Newton’s genius and legacy are now accepted facts, there was no inkling during his early years that this was destined him. Born in Woolsthorpe, England on a Christmas Day in 1642, there were odds stacked against Newton’s survival. He was born premature and his survival was uncertain. Just prior to his birth his father had expired. Even his youth was nothing illustrious, as he even ventured briefly into managing his family farm. The turning point for Newton’s life in science came with his enrolment in Cambridge University in 1661. Here, he came under the charge of distinguished cleric and mathematician Isaac Barrow, who mentored and inspired the young man, especially in mathematics. It was under the guidance of Barrow that Newton would conceive and articulate some of the most groundbreaking scientific dis coveries of the modern era.i As per an autobiographical account written for his nephews, the major streams of Newton's scientific work were all initiated during the plague years of 1665--66, when Cambridge was closed down due to an outbreak of plague and the young Newton went home for a short break. It was during this time that some of the cornerstone discoveries and inventions of modern physics came about. During this period, the inquisitive and penetrative mind of Newton started working on the laws of universal gravitation, the development of calculus, and the nature and behavior of light. The findings he made on these projects would enable him to make vital contributions to mathematics, theoretical physics, astronomy and experimental physics. Given the magnitude of some of these contributions, it is fair to say that Newton opened new vistas in these subjects and spawned the development of modern physics. In other words, he began to invent â€Å"a set of mathematical techniques, including what we call the binomial theorem and differential calculus. He did a set of optical experiments that demonstrated that white light is composed of a mixture of all colors of the rainbow. And he theorized that the Moon is maintained in its orbit around Earth by the same force that causes heavy objects near Earth's surface to fall to the ground--in other words, he began to think about the law of universal gravitation.†ii Although there is no precise answer to the date of origin of modern physics, a strong case can be made that it started in 1647 with the publication of Isaac Newton’s Philosophie Naturalis Principia Mathematica. In recognition of the momentousness of this publication, the Encyclopedia Britannica called Newton â€Å"’the culminating figure of the scientific revolution of the l7th Century’, and describes Principia Mathematica as ‘one of the most important works in the history of modern science.’ From its inception, modem science has quite simply dominated the human mind.†iii The sweep and influence of Newton’s work on subsequent scientific developments can be gleaned from the list of his important works. In Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, Newton gives a concise account of his discoveries in terrestrial and celestial mechanics, which is a cornerstone for modern physics. In it, he explicated how universal gravitation is operant upon objects on earth as well as in the celestial space. Further, â€Å"

PeopleSoft vs. Oracle Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

PeopleSoft vs. Oracle - Research Paper Example s, â€Å"The acquisition of one company by another that is accomplished not by coming to an agreement with the target companys  management, but by going  directly to  the company’s shareholders or fighting to replace management in order to get the acquisition approved† (Investopedia, 2012). The hostile takeover bid of the company was unusual due to the fact that the company had no interest in the product or services that PeopleSoft offered. Instead Oracle was solely interested in the customers of PeopleSoft. The plan of Oracle was to convert all the customers of PeopleSoft into its EPR system. Another unusual aspect of the original offer was that it was only 6% above the market value of the firm. Typically most hostile takeover bids are at least 20% above the market value. It seemed as if Oracle was taking a huge gamble in this takeover offer since the firm was not going to utilize the intellectual property of PeopleSoft to its advantage. The plan of Oracle was to increase its market share by eliminating its top competitor. The conditions that needed to be met for the independent boards of directors to determine if the sale of the company was in the best interest of the company was whether the hostile takeover bid maximizes the shareholders wealth. The initial offer was so low that there was no reason for the company to accept it since the bid was undervalued in comparison with other hostile takeovers of publicly traded companies. Even though the primary focus of the board should be the shareholders, the interest of other stakeholders of the company such as the employees and the customers were also important. Based on Oracle’s plan some of the negative consequences included mass firing of employees due to downsizing and a deterioration of customer relations. PeopleSoft had in its bylaws a poison pill to protect itself against hostile takeovers. The poison pill was a bylaw that stated that the company had the ability to release more shares in order to dilute

Inspiration and Inerrancy Essay Example for Free

Inspiration and Inerrancy Essay Living in a Fallen world, people tend to search for answers to life’s questions in places they should not be looking. This causes them to belittle the actual source of answers God has provided for us, the Bible. I find it hard to explain God’s authority to an unbelieving individual talk less of the Bible’s authority. If a person doesn’t believe the bible, it can be a task to convince them that it has any authority. It is easy to explain the authority of the government or police, because these are authorities they are subject to and they can see, but when to comes to the authority of God and the bible, it is a different perspective. God has given us the Bible as a gift of love for us His children to follow until He comes back. It is the divine truth to all of humanity. The Bible is God’s revelation in written form to man. That is where the authority of the Bible comes from, the divine revelation of God Himself. Biblical inspiration is the doctrine in Christian theology concerned with the divine origin of the bible and what it teaches. Compared to the modern definition of inspiration, which is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something especially to do something creative, biblical inspiration is God breathed, divine influence of the Holy spirit. God revealed Himself to selected people whom he had inspired to write the books of the Bible. In 2 Peter 1:21 the bible says for prophecy never had it’s origin in the human will, but prophets, thou humans spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Inerrancy states that the Bible’s word is accurate, authoritative and free of error. There are four separate arguments for validating that the Bible is error free: Slippery Slope, Epistemological, Historical and Biblical. The slippery Slope Argument is the least important of the four. One of the foundational principles that is a slipping slope is confession of sins. Many scholars have argued whether we need to repent of our sins even after we’ve been saved. Read more: Inspirational Essay About Life New teaching state that we do not need to repent of our sins once we are saved. This is diabolical to what the bible says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sin, he is faithful and just and He will forgive us of our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. The Epistemological Argument says that we shouldn’t trust that the whole bible is error free, that we cannot tell what parts are accurate and what parts aren’t. Some who deny inerrancy say that the presence of errors does not mean we cannot trust it, because we trust our teachers in school even though we know that they are not perfect and theta the make mistakes. The Historical Argument suggests that there is a long lasting organization from Christian forefathers who believed in the Bible’s inerrancy. Princeton theologians made up the Bible’s inerrancy in the 19th century and Feinburg disproved the notion. Lastly, the Biblical Argument, which is the strongest of the four, simply states that we can trust the Scriptures simple because the scripture tell us to. In Titus 1:2, the bible says that God does not lie. In Isaiah 61:1, Isaiah wrote God’s plan for redeeming man under the Inspiration of God and in Luke 4:18, Jesus who had been inspired by the same spirit as His Father quoted the same plan as His Father. With over a millennium between the time of Isaiah and Jesus, we know that the redemption plan is true and inspired by God. This is the relationship between inspiration and inerrancy. Also the fact that God said that it would happen and it did shows that the Bible is true. In the process of explaining to my inquisitive jogger, I would let him or her know about my testimony and the numerous things God has done in my life. Also, I would try and explain some of the other teaching of the bible about confession and how when we confess the things from the Bible, they come to pass if we have faith. People tend to be more convinced when they can relate to you on a personal level. In the way that I live my life, I believe that the word of God is real and infallible. It is the truth and has authority. God breathe and inspired people to write. They wrote things and the things came to pass in due time. The bible instructs us to be faithful to His Great commission and to live our life in a way that pleases Him. These with the other things that He has spoken and have come to pass, I have enough reason to believe Him.

Rebellion and Social Norms Among Youth Essay

Young people have a tendency not to comply with any laws when it’s come to their wellbeing. Young people always try to express their opinions and restrain from obeying their leaders which sometimes lead to a disaster result of their poor decisions in life. According to Gary Schwartz book, explain what happens in Sammy’s mind and what causes the reaction of quitting his job at the end (Schwartz 55). Therefore, the issue of young people is rebellion against their social norms is the central theme of the â€Å"A&P† john Updike story. At the beginning of the story, Sammy is fully within his place in society as a whole (Saldana 95). Meaning that he is just an average teenager with an average job in a small town where everyone knows each other. At that time, Sammy was a cashier at a supermarket named A&P in a small town north of Boston in 1961. There begins Sammy’s rebellion when the trio of girls enter the supermarket with bathing suits on and barefoot. After the girls enter the Supermarket and walk in every department to look for the item they need. Lengel the manager of the supermarket approaches the girls and lectures them on what they are wearing on them inside of the supermarket. After the girls walk away, Sammy gets mad and decides to quit his job at this point. Sammy unleashes an impression identity style behavior against Lengel (Schwartz 35). Which mean Sammy feels for the first time in his life that he has to let go his timidity and confront Lengel without thinking of his action to get Queenie attention. The way Lengel undresses the girls with his eyes make Sammy sick to his stomach. That is what triggers Sammy’s anger to react as if he does not care of what happens to him. As long he receives Queenie’s attention, it’s enough for him. Today, young people wear any kind of clothes that attract people’s attention. Sometimes the way they dress can be very provocative. Even though Sammy is gloomy at the beginning of the story, he begins to feel his happiness at the end but not the way he has plan it would be for his action. Sammy has gone from being judgmental to a hero Fritz 2 and then he starts regretting his decisions (Saldana 96). He experiences a transformation; he knows that life will be harder for him hereafter. That is why an old priest of Haiti said â€Å"one must never act in conformity with society and should be willing to take risks†. Meaning a wrong move at any time can make the society reject you. Social class structures have a significant role in this story and can be viewed as one of the norms that Sammy is rebelling against (Schwartz 45). Perhaps in Lengel mind, he thinks that they come from a low class family that does not teach them how to act in public. When Lengel makes it his business to reprimand Queenie and the other girls, she maintains her stubborn comportment and explains that she is here to pick up an item that her mother requests her to buy. In response to this, Lengel takes a step further by first repeating himself and then explains to the girls, â€Å"We want you decently dressed when you come in here† (Updike). According to Sammy, Lengel is a heart cold person, whose interpretation of the ideal person in this society: God fearing, church people who know their place and not go against their will. It is at this point in the story that Queenie loses her bearing for the first time. Sammy’s response to this predicts that his decision to defy Lengel and the supermarket rules will be signified by his exposing his own shoulders, and that is precisely what occurs. Rebellion and social norms appear to have an impact among young people this day. Most of the time, they stand up for what they feel is right and neglect the consequences. Sammy was able to bring attention to him, but it did not work the way that he had planned it would be. The girls most likely didn’t even know that Sammy even quit his job. He tried very hard to get Queenie to see him and accept him, but that didn’t work either. That is why people can never sympathize with Sammy’s action because it results to an act of rebellion against his social norms.

How Revolutions Caused The Negative Western Influences On...

Revolutions, whether successful or not, inevitably change the place in which they happen. In the early 20th century, nearly all of Africa was colonized by European powers. Colonialism, and Africans’ ill feelings toward being colonized, inspired unity, desire for social change, and an urge for independence. Revolutions were imminent in Africa due to the strict policies of segregation, social structure, and feelings of superiority that the Europeans brought. These feelings were ingrained in many people both consciously and sub-consciously. Many Africans, after independence, fell back into this old routine and when the white populations left, these feelings of superiority and the old social structure continued to manifest itself Africa, only in a new form. This was, and continues to be Africa’s biggest problem today. The goal of revolution, and independence in Africa was to purge the negative western influences and attitudes that Europeans had put in place. However, even a fter independence, the same European powers, and their conglomerates continued to influence the governments and people. Many people of Africa fell back into their old ways and had similar thought processes under colonial rule. These fallbacks included superiority of men over women, social status, and the other obligations that one has to society. As Winston Churchill famously remarked â€Å"Those that fail to learn history, are doomed to repeat it.† It was this recession back into the European guidelines thatShow MoreRelatedCovert Operations During World War II1719 Words   |  7 Pages The United States has had a long and complicated journey with intelligence.
